Summary/Abstract: Polish-speaking East-Prussians of the Evangelical confession were wont to choose as the subject-matter of their versed correspondence pieces, published in local newspapers or calendars, elements of biographies of various neighbourhood and vicinity dwellers that had happened to fall victim to a disaster (fire, manslaughter, sudden death, etc.). Descriptions of the course of a tragic incident, with exhibited ‘course of the life’ of the affected individual, are organised by a catalogue of religious, moral and social values in demand amongst the Prussian Mazurians. These Mazurian biographical miniatures enable insight into nineteenth-century customs, mentality and everyday life of this borderland community.
