Summary/Abstract: The focus of the article are mental verbs (verbs of knowledge, understanding and thinking) in contemporary Russian language, viewed through the perspective of syntactic valence. The author examines the grammatical realizations of the propositional argument in sentences with mental verbs that represent predicate-argument structure P (x, q). All forms of representation of the propositional argument are divided into three types: one, in which the propositional argument is represented in the structure, another, in which it is compressed, and yet another, which involves splitting the propositional argument. The author shows that the syntactic realizations of the three types are, respectively, an analogue reflection of the propositional structure, a higher or lower compression of the propositional argument, and, finally, its splitting and the doubling of syntactic positions. The author takes into account the regularity with which each grammatical pattern is implemented, providing the relevant quantitative data.
