Summary/Abstract: The goal of the article is to present initial empirical studies concerning employee development in SMEs on the basis of the European Social Fund (ESF) in Poland in the perspective 2007-2013. The empirical studies were carried out in 50 SMEs in Opole and Lower Silesia voivodeships in 2016, using CATI method. The final research conclusions relate to: the reasons for applying for EU projects, where most companies declared they wanted to improve the qualifications of employees; types of training and development activities, which were mainly: computer training, foreign language and interpersonal skills ones; and problems that beneficiaries of EU projects had. These were: too complicated application forms, excessive meticulousness of clerks and delays in payments during the implementation of the project.
