Summary/Abstract: The following article is devoted to Jan Michał Witort (1853–1903), a political activist, a columnist and an ethnographer. Between 1875 and 1879, he lived in exile in Arkhangelsk Governorate, an experience he would later recount in a memoir written around 1895. The text is particularly interesting as it reflects the early attitude of the future researcher towards people from other cultures. He describes representatives of the European civilization in ethical terms and categories.
