Summary/Abstract: The article shows research perspectives of linguistic study of onomastic material excerpted from church records of the 19th-century Warsaw (1826–1850). The analysis is focused on the changes of surnames of converts from Judaism to Christianity: Catholicism, Protestantism and Orthodox Christianity. The surnames were first divided into two groups: of Polish and non-Polish origin, and then analyzed with respect to various mechanisms of change. The following changes have been observed: replacing the old surname with a new one (stemming from a different root), replacing or adding another suffix (morphological adaptation), alternation of graphic and/or phonetic form of the surname (graphic-phonetic adaptation) and translating the surname. The paper also briefly describes semantic types of Polish surnames adopted by converts.
