Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on two cases of local memory activism in the late 1990s and in the mid-2000s in the village of Zhilentsi (Kyustendil region) and the town of Sandanski. In both cases the issues of contention concern the period of state socialism. The stakes are the same – monuments to local heroes. In both cases family members as well as other actors from the respective community are involved. In both cases, local institutions give their consent. Yet, there are intriguing differences which invite further contemplation on the politics of memory, mnemonic activism and mnemonic entrepreneurship, on local identity and consensus on the past.
