Summary/Abstract: The paper follows the main themes of R. Bernstein's work placing accents on the hermeneutics, the conception of praxis, the convergence of some ideas of different philosophical traditions and their relevance to the contemporary situation in philosophy and the social sciences. Special attention is paid to one of the author's main themes: the anticartesianism shared by marxism, existentialism, pragmatism and analytical philosophy. The recovery of the hermeneutical dimension of the social sciences is another important theme of his. In this connection, Bernstein's appraisal of Gadamer is very interesting, situating the latter's ideas in the context of the anglo-american philosophical tradition. The last work of the author on the situation of "modernity/ postmodernity" is considered as well. Brief comments are offered on some questionable theses of Bernstein. Special accent is laid on his view of the practical and moral aspect of the social sciences and therefore — on his effort to restore the concept of wisdom to its traditional place.
