Summary/Abstract: For every serious cultural policy, museums are the creators and guardians of cultural and national identity and the foundations of knowledge. The Museum of Natural History of Serbia, since its foundation in 1895 (as The Museum of the Serbian Country) has not received the elementary, adequate conditions for work (building, budget, staff). History of this particularly significant cultural and scientific institution is a sad example of misunderstanding and arrogance of the authorities towards national culture, science and education lasting till today.
