Summary/Abstract: The main aim of the paper is to determine the relations between the education in different fieldsof university study and the innovativeness of an economy. The research method is an analysis ofthe correlations between the number of graduates in particular fields and the number of patentapplications filed in a given country. The study confirms the hypothesis that not all numbers oftertiary education graduates are positively correlated with innovativeness indicators. The strongeststatistically relevant correlation was found between the number of patent applications and thenumber of graduates in medicine, science, humanities and arts, and engineering. Another relevantcorrelation was found between the number of patent applications and the number of graduatesin social sciences, business and law, and education, but only several years after they hadfinished studying. There is no correlation between the number of patent applications andgraduates in agriculture or services.
