The Sublime Porte and Bulgarian Church Conflict

Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the Bulgarian church conflict in the context of the Ottoman administrative reforms. Chronological scope of this article is the period 1839-1870 years. The author traces the influence of the main reformist acts of the Porte and international crises of this time on the escalation and the settlement of the church conflict. The author believes that through the establishment of the Bulgarian Exarchate (1870) Bulgarians acquired opportunities to grow into Turkish administrative structures and Islamic society. As a nation-millet Bulgarians became subject of the Ottoman legal relations. But to the short historical perspective this has broughtconsiderable political dividends to Bulgarians official demarcation of the borders of the Bulgarian Exarchate simplified the problem of demarcation of the national borders.
