Summary/Abstract: For the renewal of the liturgy of sacraments after the Second Vatican Council, Paul VI appointed a special Consilium which together with the Sacred Congregation of the Rites had to review the Roman Ritual. The special study-groups elaborated the rites of the sacraments, i.e. Ordines which constitute the new Roman Ritual. In this study the author reports the works of the Consilium and of the Sacred Congregation of Rites up to the editio tipica of each Ordo and shows the general characteristic of the Ritual. The rites of each sacrament take into con- sideration the main principles of the liturgical renewal in the spirit of Vaticanum II and of the post-conciliar documents of the Church. It has been made according to sana traditio and to the achievements of theology. The Bible has been more appreciated, the principles of the participatio actuosa of the faithful and the possibility of the adaptation and inculturation of rites by the Bishop’s Conferences. Beside the rubrics each Ordo contains the theological and pastoral Introduction (Praenotanda). The new Ritual is an excellent “tool” of the Church for fulfilling its sanctifying and teaching mission.
