Summary/Abstract: The article is an evaluation of the current state of what can be called“historic centre” in the Romanian cities that suffered different types of interventions in the communist period. Regarding the recent history of these urban components, the paper evaluates the particular situation of the Romanian area, mainly Wallachia and Moldavia, and compares it to the rest of Europe. We can detect a few significant phases in the past century, in which Romanian cities suffered due to harsh interventions. The most pregnant ones are: the one following the 50s, after the 1977earthquake, and the one happening today, the study highlighting the process and the results of these phases. From this point of view, there are cities that remained without the historic morphostructures, cities that conserve them partially, and very few that have historic centres kept almost intact. The main target of this study is conducting case studies for Romanian cities from Moldavia and Wallachia and, as comparison, for cities of Arad-Oradea area. Thus, taken in account were medium sized cities– Piatra Neamţ and Curtea de Argeş (from Moldavia and Walachia), and as reference the small western cities of Ineu and Pecica. For each of them, reconstructions of the longer developments, especially of the last two centuries are proposed (using historical cartography and other data), and the types of interventions undergone in the communist era, and their current state are presented.
