Summary/Abstract: In this paper the author presents the rise of the Pejacsevich or Pejacsevich Virovitički (of Virovitica) family up the social ladder from being local traders to the position of the highest-ranking officials of the Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia (Ban). The author focuses on the persons who characterised this rise as well as on the processes that enabled it during the 18th and 19th century. Some members of the family took advantage of the social processes in Slavonia during the first half of the 18th century and acquired financial assets that they invested in several Slavonian estates and thereby consolidated their social rise. The more or less successful management of the estates they had acquired, or the improvement of the manors, contributed to their rise. Attention is drawn to the changes in the way the marriages of the members of the Pejacsevich / Pejacsevich Virovitčki family were contracted, and the impact of these changes on their social rise during the 18th and 19th century.
