Summary/Abstract: Historians are aware that evidence is what makes history. It is the principal tool which we use to come to objective conclusions concerning various events. The nature of evidence, therefore, is a topic which has concerned historians since the basic tenets of the discipline were laid down. Even Herodotus, often considered to be the first professional historian, addressed this issue and developed a sliding scale of evidence to determine how firm a conclusion could be made. Not surprisingly, he gave most credence to events which the historian personally observed and then moved down the scale to events retold by credible sources, and so on. The question of evaluating evidence is a topic that naturally still concerns modem historians who mostly agree on a modem version of this sliding scale, with documents generally heading the list of sources from which to build an evidence base.
