Some brief information on the Albanian Women During the XVII - XVIII Centuries

Summary/Abstract: This article aims to give some information about several aspects regarding the life of Albanian women during 17-18’nth centuries. The arguments are based on interpersonal and family cases brought before the Shari ‘a courts. The examples given in the article were taken from court registers of main Albanian cities as Berat, Elbasan, Korça and Shkodra. As seen from above records, the Albanian women of Ottoman period had some juridical rights in some aspects such bequest, marriage, divorce, managing her properties and earnings and bringing before court cases regarding to her rights. Also, the data shows that she was very active outside the home like working or giving her contribution to the society through waqf's or similar humanitarian organizations. Main part of the court registers contains data on basic elements of daily life, as marriage or divorce registers. It is important to note that a part of non Muslim’s used to avoid their communal courts and go to the Ottoman ones. These registers also, contain many mixed marriages registers that is a very important data for the researchers of this period. A lot of applies to the courts also, consisted in the cases of bequest. And, the other cases regard to the role of women in society such donation registers, legalization of waqfs or other social subjects. The results show that the Albanian women of 17-18’nth centuries faced many problems caused by the social, economic and cultural conditions, but, also she had some rights that were given to her by the Ottoman law.
