Some Examples of Waqfiya's from the Court Registers of Berat City IN THE BEGINNING OF XVIIICENTURY

Summary/Abstract: The wafq’s were social endowments with religious and charitable purposes which were very common in Muslim societies and especially in the ottoman period. Documents found in the ottoman archives show that these institutions were very crucial in the development of the whole empire. The main fields of the contribution given by wafq’s were religion and education institutions, infrastructure and social services. Statistics show the activity of more than 35 thousand wafq’s in the Ottoman Empire and their budget was nearly 30 % of the whole empire. The wafq’s were present in Albania too which was part of the Ottoman Empire for centuries. The documents of the Ottoman period in the Albanian State Archive show the existence of these institutions in whole country. In this article, we tried to give some evidences about some Waqfiya's (act of foundation) of the beginnings of XVIII century and the contribution of the wafq’s in the Albanian city of Berat. It aims to give some information on how these institutions affected in the daily life of the people and the development of the city of Berat in the Ottoman Period during the XVIII century
