Summary/Abstract: The article aims to analyse the role and importance of the media in contemporary society and its legal regulation in Bulgaria. In the first part issues related to the specific features and activities of mass media are commented and their main characteristics are defined. The focus of analysis in the second part is the significance and role of media in shaping public opinion as an intermediary in social communication both in vertical and in horizontal section of public structures. The third part is aimed at clarifying the forms of management and organization of the media. Legal regulation of the media in Bulgaria is analysed in the fourth part. Issues, related to the development of Internet as a new media environment, whose influence is growing steadily and which poses new challenges, are also raised.
