Poetry and Ancient Enigmas: Porhyry’s Essay on the Cave of the Nymphs in the Odyssey

Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to give an understanding of Porphyry’s exegetical approach in the essay On the Cave of the Nymphs highlighting its relevance to literary studies. The analysis is centered around the content and compositional issues. It takes into account the relation of the essay to author’s other Homeric studies. Attention is given to the nature of the employed allegoresis and the conceptions guiding the interpretation are explored as well.
