Summary/Abstract: The article examines the ongoing debates on the future of the European Union taking place in Germany. It seeks to determine whether the country’s political elites are prepared to depart from the dominant concept of the Economic and Monetary Union. The concept is based on the conviction that prices are set to remain stable and that market mechanisms alone will prove sufficient to guide all economic activities without external help or interference. The article provides an overview of the opinions and reactions by German economic experts showing that the French president Macron’s ideas for reforming the euro zone resonate well with the Germans. Their implementation is being considered in the context of more profound economic reforms being adopted by France. However, the French proposals to establish a separate euro zone budget have met with little enthusiasm. From the German perspective, it makes little sense to give up sovereignty in setting the country’s own fiscal policy.
