Summary/Abstract: Slovak kinship terminology is descriptive in its essence. To differentiate between kin, especially for the direct family members, it uses separate terms. To describe other positions, it mostly uses a description. Descriptive, and from the linguistic point of view, Slovak character of the kinship terminology, was preserved amongst the Slovak minorities living in countries of central and southern Europe. If there are differences in the names of the basic positions, they usually result from Slovak regional, dialectal and linguistic particularities. Beside Slovak names for each of the basic positions, we can also find loan-words from the languages of majority communities with whom Slovak minorities live. The loan-words from other languages did not substitute the Slovak names, but always appear parallel to them or they are in minority position (with exception of Hungary).
