Summary/Abstract: Area studies traditionally comprise the politically and culturally described non-European and non-North American regions such as Asia, Near and Central East, Africa, Latin America, the Pacific, East Europe, etc. Given the difference between the non-European regional studies, on the one hand, and the disciplinary studies, on the other, this analysis sets up to explore the theoretical and institutional aspects of Area studies as an inter-discipline aiming to pose it in the different and competetive systems of studies. The need to clearify the structure of Area studies, its objectives and the history of the subject comes from the correspondence of the aims set for the analysis of globalism and territoriality in the cultural and civilization studies. Area studies have borrowed new approaches and methods from various discplines related to the study of cultures and civilizations. This borrowing changes the attitude to it as a study of homogenizing cultural formations. My aim is therefore to argue that inter-disciplinary character of Area studies is its advantage which enables it to respond to the challenges of globalization and to the rapidly changing forms of cultural identity in the global world.
