Summary/Abstract: The article discusses interdisciplinarity as a research strategy central to the academic field of area studies in order to test the hypothesis that the programme of Lithuania-related research (Lituanistika) is to be an area studies enterprise. Taking into consideration the short tradition of area studies in Lithuania, the article analyzes the nature of area studies and the issues of its metodological relevance as exemplified by recent experience in Asian studies. It is focused on the forms of area studies that issue from social research and the application of critical theory, as well as the determination of national interests. Finally, specific features of the programme of Lithuania-related research as an area studies enterprise are discussed with the aim of suggesting the means for overcomming disciplinary insulation and strengtening internationalisation of the field.
