INTERTEXTUAL SOURCES OF THE I. FRANKO’S POEM «MOSES»

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the brilliant poem «Moses» of the famous Ukrainian poet Ivan Franko. An attempt was made to analyze the intertextual sources of the work. History of writing this work is associated with a trip to Italy in 1904, where he saw Michelangelo's sculpture of Moses. The statue made a strong impression on the writer. In the poem hidden deep philosophical meaning, it's not just a poetic rehash the biblical text, but veiled outline the future of Ukrainian people, the relationship between the leader and people in the process of persistent pursuit «favored earth», the strength of the ethnic group that can push with their environment in the process pace-setter's revolutionary movement that will lead to victory. To insult Moses repeatedly addressed in world literature (poem «Moses» period romantic French poet Alfred Vinia, philosophical drama of the same name Hungarian Imre Madacha and Gerhart Hauptmann). In Slavic literatures mentioned character we meet in poem «Angelі» Polish poet Juliusz Słowacki,«Bar Kochba» Czech poet Jaroslav Vrchlický, «Moses» Croat Silvio Kranchevych. Inthe works of Ukrainian literature about the Prophet wrote the «Word about Law and Grace» of Hilarion, «Tale of temporary years», parables of Cyril Turov. The figure of Moses himself repeatedly Franko. So, we have allusions to the image of the prophet in a number of literary models of the early period (in the story«Petrii and Dovbushchuky» (1876), the poems «Ex nixilo», «Funeral», the collection of poems «My Emerald», in the story «Cross paths», collection «Semper tiro »). Many researchers point out the likely influence of A. Mickiewicz's ideas of "leadership" on creating the image of Moses-the spokesman of nationalist ideas. So, O. Zabuzhko speaks about the designation of the ideas of "Polish messianism" on the Ukrainian poet. The poem was inspired by "The Second Book of Moses: Exodus", but the main theme of the work is the death of Moses as a prophet, unacknowledged by his people. The artistic work is based on the biblical legend of Moses, who for forty years led the Jewish people to a desert in search of "promised land".
