Summary/Abstract: During the period of Soviet occupation, there were no favorable conditions under which Lithuanian theatre could directly reflect its relation to ideology. But even after the restitution of independence, Lithuanian theatre hesitated to engage ideologically. The article deals with the question of what reasons and models of theatrical identity determined such a closed manner of contact with the social environment. Methodology helps to reveal the peculiarities of the transitional Soviet and post-Soviet theatres from the ideological point of view. Two theatre-identity models are distinguished in the theoretical part of the article: dialogical – corresponding to a phenomenological viewpoint and a monological – corresponding to a postmodern conception of perception. The second part of the article reflects upon how Lithuanian theatre, coherent with one or another model, could function in one or another ideological system and what ways of relating to the social reality could be.
