Summary/Abstract: Naomi Segal’s introduction to the volume From Literature to Cultural Literacy (which she edited with Daniela Koleva) focuses on the recent shift in literary scholarship away from poems, fiction or dramas. This shift, which concerns researchers as well as the discipline itself, results from a growing interest in contemporary social and cultural issues. It has led to the transformation of literary scholarship into literary-and-cultural studies – a field that is based on four key concepts: textuality, fictionality, rhetoricity, and historicity. These concepts designate both the object and the method of research. Segal discusses how they have been used in the articles in the volume, in relation to four academic fields, namely cultural memory, migration and translation, electronic textuality, and biopolitics and the body. She also outlines the ways in which contributors have used the notion of cultural literacy, a method of analysing social and cultural problems, in which literary critical competencies turn out to be useful or even essential.
