Summary/Abstract: Discussed are the circumstances of the origins and publication of Czesław Miłosz’s cycle Życie w USA [‘Living in the U.S.A.’], published in Odrodzenie periodical (under the pseudonym of ‘Jan M. Nowak’) in 1946-1947, the time of his diplomatic service to the U.S. The cycle’s construction is investigated in relation to reports submitted by the poet to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The piece’s origins are outlined, in light of Miłosz’s (unpublished) correspondence with Karol Kuryluk, the then-Editor-in-Chief of Odrodzenie, and in the context of Amercian press which Miłosz read at the time of his employment with the local office-of-attaché.
