Summary/Abstract: It is generally supposed that the reason why Yugoslav nationals go to work abroad is largely because of employment difficulties at home. This supposition has grown out of the fact that the first major intensification of emigration coincided with a serious slowdown in the growth of employment at home, and of an absolute decrease in the number of persons employed in the socialist sector. However, the results of the population census of March 31, 1971, and some separate investigations recently conducted have shown that there is not sufficient correlation between the employment situation at home and temporary employment abroad to justify the conclusion that a reduction in the number of Yugoslavs going to work abroad can only be efficiently influenced by increasing employment at home. This is shown by the following figures, i (Table I).
