Summary/Abstract: The article considers the importance which freemason lodges had in the construction of new political culture in 18th century, on the ground of English political practice and French enlightenment. Attention is also focused on the main reasons why masonry didn't succeeded in holding that direction, that is, why it wasn't more than a simple transmission of aspiration for the creation of political institutions of the civil society.
