Summary/Abstract: The first part of the article defines and differentiates the concepts of diglossia and bilingualism. In that account, the terms of multilingualism and plurilingualism which recently acquired more popularity, are also defined and discussed. The second part provides a quantitative and qualitative analyses of the foreign words and expressions used by the Bulgarian community of the social network Facebook. It sets about examining the motives of the Bulgarians to use foreign words and to resort to such mechanisms as code switching in their written interaction. The phenomena of diglossia and bilingualism are examined and the possible interactions between them are derived and brought forth.
