Summary/Abstract: The Maastricht Treaty, which established the European economic and monetary union, has imposedon its signatories the obligation of implementation of standards, policies and instruments that werenecessary to introduce a common currency (euro) for the European Union (EU) member states and to transferthe authority to create the monetary policy from the member states to the EU level. One of the preconditionsfor the membership of a country in the European Union is the autonomy of its national central bank and admissionof this institution to the European System of Central Banks (ESBC). The subject of this study is thetransformation of the Polish banking system to satisfy the criterion of the EU legal convergence, presentedin a broader international and national context. The key element of this reform was the transformation of theNational Bank of Poland (NBP) from its monobank position in the former socialist state system into the fullyautonomic institution that meets all the requirements for the full participation in the ESBC.
