Summary/Abstract: This article studies a form of traditional folk dwelling. A characteristic feature of it is a space, built up and used as a barn, included in the planned corn-positional structure, organically linked with the total spatial structure of the dwelling place. These dwellings are widespread in certain mountainous regions of Bulgaria and in the plains, and were built in the second half of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century. Whether built in two or three sections, possessing one or two hearths, the plans of these dwellings are found in two basic variants, depending on the situation and the spatial construction of the barn and the other premises. The author stresses that the traditional dwellings with a barn included in their plan are an original form of the people's houses, a form which reflects a stage in their development as a dwelling-cum-farm centre, connected with the property stratification of the population in the 19th and early 20th century.
