Summary/Abstract: The interior architecture and furnishing of a traditional dwelling in the village of Bozhentsi, Gabrovo district is examined in this article. The author emphasizes that this is one of the basic and characteristic elements of the house in the village studied. Two main groups of dwellings have existed here from the end of the 18th to the early years of the 20th century, differing from one another in that some have a covered space on the principal facade, while the others have not. Owing to this the first group can be assigned to the so-called open houses, or houses with a covered space, while the second belong to the closed houses or houses without a covered space. The author emphasizes that in both groups of dwellings, the principal premises, which form part of their plan structure and have their own interior architecture and furnishing, are the same in all houses. After describing the characteristic spaces and premises of a Bozhentsi dwelling, the author considers the architectural and functional specifics of each one of them and examines the characteristic elements of the furnishings, their artistic ornamentation and decorative implementation. She stresses in conclusion that the interior architecture and furnishing of a traditional Bozhentsi house is a synthesis between functional content, utilitarian necessity and artistic and decorative detail.
