Summary/Abstract: This article attempts a survey of calendar customs and rituals as a factor for the preservation of the ethnic and cultural identity of Bulgarians living in the southern parts of Ukraine. They are a rich source shedding light on Bulgarian folk culture and the changes it has been undergoing when surrounded by other cultures. The National calendar is examined with regard to vocabulary and terminology and is presented in the form of brief ethno-linguistic entries, describing not only the meanings of words but also the rituals and beliefs forwhich they stand and without which lexical meanings may sometimes seem unmotivated and inexplicable. The ethno-linguistic entries are organized alphabetically.
