Summary/Abstract: This paper attests to the sensitive reversible connection between variation as a phenomenon in standard language and standard language codification. In accordance with Prague School functionalism, variation is explained not merely as a product of the human factor in a language system (codification) but as one of the most important implements of language codification that enables it to sustain the flexible stability of linguistic norms.
