Summary/Abstract: In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the education of the girls and particularly Muslim girls was not something that was subject of great concern. The first school for Muslim girls was opened in 1894 in Sarajevo, under name Muslim Elementary School in which, in addition to Arabic alphabet and Islamic religious instruction, the girls were also taught Latin alphabet and secular subjects (reading, calculus, history and geography). By the decision of the National Government for Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1897, the school became Muslim National Primary School for Girls in Sarajevo (four year program). In 1901 the program was extended for three more years, as an extended three year course with the purpose of educating Muslim girls to become teachers in the lower Muslim primary schools.
