Summary/Abstract: Recalling Jan Kott’s famous assertion that Hamlet is like a sponge, Taroń claims: “Maciej Englert’s Hamlet absorbs no contemporary culture, the play is essentially antiquated, though its costumes and set design gesture toward the present” (Współczesny Theater in Warsaw). In describing the play she devotes the most space to Borys Szyc (Hamlet), comparing his role with Mel Gibson’s in Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation. The critic concludes by saying that the director’s aim to free Hamlet from the commentaries that have sprung up around it resulted in an illegible interpretation of the drama.
