Summary/Abstract: The main theme of this year’s Wiener Festwochen was the economic crisis and the growing disillusionment with theater and theatricality. In most of the plays presented at the festival documentary film material dominated over the stage performance. The result was more chaos and numerous simplifications than new and engaging artistic forms. Simplifications were also found in the plays’ concepts. Cheap moralizing dominated the festival, using noble humanism to mask cultural colonialism – which was politely applauded by the bourgeois Viennese audiences.
