Summary/Abstract: The beginning of the twenty-first century is characterised by the increasing economicimportance of the People's Republic of China. The Chinese economy ranks as the secondlargest in the world in terms of nominal gross domestic product (GDP) and the largestwhen you take into account the purchasing power parity (PPP). Moreover, China is thelargest trading power in the world. However, the speech delivered by President XiJinping at the World Economic Forum in Davos (17 January 2017) showed that Chinamay not be as strong as it looks on paper, especially in the face of President DonaldTrump's protectionist rhetoric. In this context, questions arise about the current andfuture position of Chinese currency. Another question is whether Beijing's growingaspirations in the international arena go hand in hand with the strength of the yuan(CNY), also known under the official name of the renminbi (RMB)? The purpose of thisarticle is to attempt to answer the above questions.
