Digital Platform and Development of Library Infrastructure for Management of Digital Resources

Summary/Abstract: The expectations that the focus on the digital environment will influence the reduction of interest in books and the library seemed as largely justified. This is particularly applicable to the generations born in the nineties (and after) - so-called Generation Y or the Generation Z. In this regard, it is already evident that the hypertext and electronic book are easily imposed as their "first" choice. This paper will address the development of information technologies and the new tasks and responsibilities that are put in front of librarians - particularly regarding further development of library information infrastructure that will enable integrated management of digital resources. To adapt library infrastructure in a way that it is possible to manage the new, electronic content includes the construction of an appropriate usage system - especially in the case of e-books. As one of the possible solutions, the creation of a single digital platforms at the state level is advised. The paper further raises the questions about e-publishing, ebook aggregators, building a system of ebooks loans, and copyright protection using digital resources. All of this is of great importance for contemporary librarians because, otherwise, the libraries could disappear along with pre-information age generations.
