The Development of Secular Jewish Education in Lvov in 1772–1879

Summary/Abstract: For Jews in Lvov cheders and Talmud track were the primary place of education. This article describes the origins Jewish secular education in the town. Author describes the school founded by Hertz Homberg which were sharply adopted by the Jews community. Homberg, a representative of the Jews Enlightenment, the so-called Haskalah he performed as a representative of government official. Emperor Joseph II strove to make Jews a good citizens. They had to accept the German language and culture. Next school, founded in 1843 by Rabbi Abraham Kohn was accepted better than Homberg’s school. It has been accepted and developed successfully in in subsequent years. The number of student was so high in 1855 that Jews opened two more schools. The idea of assimilation with Polish society appered along with introducing Polish language to schools and offices (1869). The next period of evolution of Jewish schools in Lvov ties with public schools the names of Tadeusz Czacki. In this school was teaching the Polish language.
