Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the epic novel traditions in the Russian literature of the XIXth century (mainly in the epic novel "War and Peace" by L. N. Tolstoy) and their manifestation in "The Road to Calvary", which was written in another epoch and based on different historical material. The author emphasizes that the selection of a genre depends on the writer’s goals and objectives. The main question of this article is how the epic prose traditions of the Russian literature inherited by A. N. Tolstoy are transformed and serve the purpose of depicting the turning point in the life of the country and its people. The article describes various forms of how the writer deals with historical material, since its interpretation is one of the fundamental traditions of literature. Plot construction and the system of characters in the novel are analyzed in terms of Russian epic prose traditions.
