The activities of the Directorate Public Schools of Galicia (1914–1915) (based on materials of the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine, Lviv)

Summary/Abstract: This article presents problems of creation and functioning of the Directorate Public Schools of Galicia, which was executive part or Temporary Military General Government in occupied territory of Galicia in 1914–1915. The role of Governor-General G. Bobrinsky and member of the Third State Duma D. Chikhachov in the initiation and implementing reforms in the education sector in Galicia are also being revealed. Direction, which was created by them and guided by Boris Pleskoy, existed six month and hasn’t left significant results of its activities. Special attention was paid on the policy of Russification of public education and personnel structure of this Department. Problems of training of professional Russian-speaking teachers, opening a few private schools in January 1915, using different schoolbooks, projection future reform of public education in Galicia are being analyzed too. However, the population didn’t support this reforms and methods of their execution. Besides, there was no material and technical base to realize it, so that plans were impracticable.
