Summary/Abstract: A tangible increase of engagement in risk taking behaviours is observed during adolescence. Smoking, drinking, drugs using, practising unsafe sex, playing truant, delinquent and antisocial behaviours are common in this period of life. These behaviours are usually regarded as “problem behaviours”. Researches from several disciplines make efforts to recognize factors influencing these risk activites and to eliminate them. The main goal of this article is to analyse adolescent risk taking from different point of view – “risk taking as opportunity” and to present social and cultural factors reinforcing young people’s propensity to take risk. This is argued that adolescent risk involvement serves main developmental goals such as achieving social status, demonstrating autonomy and establishing identity of young people.
