Young People's Educational Decisions in Globalization Era. Studying Abroad Motives - Research Report

Summary/Abstract: In this article research results of polish and foreign students' motives for studying abroad are presented. Participants were 66 polish students of first and second year undergraduate course and 23 foreign students of second year undergraduate course studying in Poland. The results showed that 70% of polish students is ready to study abroad. As main causes of possible departure career motives were pointed out: the diploma of foreign university will be my asset on the job market, the diploma of foreign university is supposed to help me in career development, language learning and professional experience gaining. As important other reasons were also showed - no/low oportunities for well-paid job in home country and no/low job opportunities in the home country. The foreign students as main reasons pointed out: the diploma of foreign university is supposed to help me in career development, meeting other cultures, professional experience gaining. A comparison of importancy of taking studies aborad motives between polish and foreign students showed that statistically important differences deal with five motives. Polish students comparing to foreign students as more important reasons recognized: no/low job opportunities in the home country, no/low oportunities for well-paid job in home country, he diploma of foreign university will be my asset on the job market, language learning and the desire to prove that I can handle.
