Summary/Abstract: Ignacy Koschembahr-Łyskowski (1864–1945) was one of the most excellent Polish lawyers in 19th and 20th centuries. He worked as a professor of Roman law at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland (1895–1900) and subsequently at the University of Lviv (1900–1915) and at the University of Warsaw (1915–1935). He is an author of many valuable papers concerning history and institutions of Roman law, written in German, Polish and French, such as: Die Teorie der Exceptionem nach klassischen ro¨mischen Recht(Berlin 1893); Die Condictio als Bereicherungsklage im klassischen ro¨mischen Recht (vol. 1–2,Weimar 1903–1907); O stanowisku prawa rzymskiego w powszechnej ustawie cywilnej dla ce- sarstwa austryackiego (Lwów 1911); Conventiones contra bonos mores dans le droit romain (Paris 1926). Professor Koschembahr-Łyskowski was also interested in civil law and comparative law. Since 1919 he was a member of Codification Commission of the Republic of Poland, from 1927 to 1939 as its vice-president. He has prepared a draft of Civil Code(Book One. General Provisions) with the justifications. He kept scientific contacts with many famous scholars and he was a member of international and domestic scientific societies. Ignacy Koschembahr-Łyskowski has received for his outstanding achievements in scientific area an honorary doctorate of Stefan Batory University in Vilnius in 1929. Awards ceremony took place on May 29, 1930.
