Summary/Abstract: The author's interest concerns mainly the issue of human alienation, which can stem from the society being subjected to both system transformation as well as economic and ideological changes. The problem of alienation is reflected upon in the context of the 21st century contemporaneity as experienced by the Western European societies, which on the one hand could be characterised as law-observing civil societies, and on the other as consumer societies, gradually transformed into information societies of the High Tech era, the development of which is caused by the phenomenon of globalization. However, the article focuses on the post-communist societies and post-totalitarian states, which in view of their evolutionary backwardness find themselves in twice as difficult a predicament – where they have to struggle not only to minimize the disparity between them and the best-developed countries, but more importantly to tackle the everpresent problems brought about by the phenomenon of globalization. Under such circumstances, one of the greatest challenges of all for the societies of the countries undergoing system transformation to face is to shape, or better yet to create from scratch, a moral culture of the public sphere that would be congruous with their own tradition. The author is then trying to procure the answer to the question of specific conditions that have to be fulfilled for social and civil alienation not to occur and, in consequence, for moral and axiological erosion not to take place in the considered societies.
