Summary/Abstract: The process of genesis and development of the idea of “knowledge society” has been traced, and its most important characteristics and implications in science policy have been elucidated. The interrelations between globalization, global social development and knowledge-based economy are further examined. In a comparative plan, differences in the concepts of “knowledge society” and “information society” have been identified. The difference between the concomitant concepts of “information management” in its two forms (technologically oriented and content-oriented) and “knowledge management” is clarified. Examples of their institutional realization are outlined, while the fact of their co-evolution is manifested.
