NATO’S collective defence: A new strategic framework

Summary/Abstract: This article discusses Transatlantic relations and prospects for the strengthening of NATO’s collective defence following the recent summits in Newport (2014) and Warsaw (2016), and in the run-up to the meeting of heads of state and government in Brussels (2017). The author tackles the pressing needs in this domain, resulting from the shaky security environment, with key “game-changing” factors, including political positions of the new US Administration, the emerging political landscape in Europe, and Russia’s persistence in undermining the current security order in its institutional, axiological, and normative aspects. The article concludes with a brief review of the main challenges ahead of NATO’s robust collective defence as a foundation for credible deterrence and effective diplomacy.
