Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the functioning of NATO in 2016, particularly in the context of the Alliance’s Warsaw summit which took place last July. It begins with a brief analysis of NATO’s strategic environment in the previous year and the main threats and challenges for the Organization, e.g. Russia’s assertive policy, terrorism, and the negative consequences of the migration crisis. Next, the preparations for the Warsaw summit are discussed with special attention to internal disputes in NATO between its eastern and southern flank on the hierarchy of threats to the Alliance’s security and its operational priorities. The main section of the article deals with the Warsaw summit and its main results. The author focuses in more detail on e.g. the Expanded Forward Presence and other initiatives to strengthen NATO deterrence capabilities on the eastern flank, the steps taken by the allies to cope with challenges in the southern neighborhood of the Organization, the measures to increase defense spending of the members and to improve their resilience to external threats and challenges. NATO’s operational engagements (including in Afghanistan) and its cooperation with partners is also briefly analyzed. In the last section, the perspectives of future evolution of the organization, especially in light of Trump’s election for US President, are discussed.
