Summary/Abstract: The article describes the history of the notion of sustainable development and the constitutional status of this idea. On the example of fossil fuels and alternative sources of energy, a global environmental problem of the twenty-first century were presented. The role of reproducing and beneficiation of natural resources and the role of preservation of natural and cultural heritage in the implementation of the principles of sustainable development were accentuated.
